Club History
The Kiwanis Club of Scarborough was officially organized May 29,1986.
Our biggest fundraiser is the "Kids Fishing Derby," which is usually held the first Saturday in May at Bayley's Camping Resort on Pine Point Road, Scarborough. Throughout the years, we’ve engaged in a number of fundraisers and service projects. In 2024, we hosted our 37th annual Derby.
In 1999, we established an annual "Benefit Gala" to benefit the Maine Children’s Cancer Program. Over seven years, this event raised over $75,000.
We sponsor three service leadership programs in the Scarborough Schools. In 1994, we helped form a Key Club at Scarborough High School. In 1998, we established a Builders Club at Scarborough Middle School. For many years, we sponsored and participated in the Terrific Kids program in the three K-2 primary schools, reading to classrooms of students. In 2006, we established a K-Kids Club at Wentworth Intermediate School.
Each year, the Club awards scholarships to graduating Scarborough High School seniors. Since 2014, we have been fortunate to be chosen as beneficiaries of the Scarborough Alumni Golf Tournament. This has enabled us to increase the number and amounts of scholarships awarded.
The Club also prepares and delivers child safety kits for parents of newborns to Maine Medical Center.
Over the years, we have held food drives to benefit the Scarborough Food Pantry, and in conjunction with other clubs in the division, we have participated a number of times with Outreach: Kids Care, organizing an assembly line to package meals to donate to local food pantries and food banks.
Among other activities, members have also made blankets for the Barbara Bush Childrens Hospital through the Linus Project, delivered holiday cards to residents at local assisted living facilities, and participated in various events with our Sponsored Youth organizations.
The Club maintains a Little Free Library on Pine Point Road in Scarborough (near Scarborough Audubon) and a Life Jacket Loaner Station near the public boat launch in Pine Point.
We currently have about 30 members. We meet for lunch every Friday from 12:00 - 1:00 at Cowbell Burger, 185 U.S. Route One, Scarborough. Guests are always welcome!
